eye pillows

This is the 3rd class that I will be teaching at The Tin Thimble, March 24th.   It's the Scrappy Eye  Pillow class.  And I love it!  The room gets filled with the wonderful smell of lavender.

Here is what my friend Amy said about her eye pillow,  "I just love my eye pillow, it is amazing! It’s pretty, it smells good, and it calms my sinus pain and headaches. I use it hot or cold."

The class supply list is available when you sign up!

scrappy series

I originally made these scrappy coasters for the Pillowcase Challenge book.  They are still fun for me to sew up a few and you guessed it - a great way for me to use up my scraps!

This is the second class in the Home Ec, Scrappy Series that you can sign up for at The Tin Thimble.  Wednesday night, March 10, 6 - 9 p.m.  The class is $30 or 4 classes at $100.  and I will have some of my own scraps to share!

See you there!

a tutorial and a giveaway

I don't know why, but I do seem to make a lot of posie pins.  I think it has something to do with me liking to use little bits of fabrics.  But lucky for you I do show you how to make some for yourself!

Right now when you visit Sarah at Makin' Projiks, you will see the posie pin that I made for her Heart 2 Heart Valentine swap.  There is a tutorial and there is also a giveaway on the following post.  Have fun with it, make a bouquet!

march 3rd

Starting with first  things first.  This coming March 3rd, Wednesday night class will begin with making these scrappy initials.  You can spell out someone's name, their monogram, or special words like love, hope, dream.

This is the first class that I will be teaching at The Tin Thimble.  I am so excited to be a part of their Home Ec series.  This really is about teaching a new generation of sewers and teaching those who have always wanted to learn to sew, but never have.   And even those like me, who just love to get out for a night of sewing fun!

To make it even more fun, I'll have bags of my own scraps for you to rummage through!  Just in case you think you might not have enough of your own.  Call 652-2134 for class registration.

scrappy classes

I love my scraps! I really do.  Each little piece of fabric has a little memory that goes with it.  My trip to Quilt Market and meeting that wonderful fabric designer, sewing up a special dress for my girl, the pillowcase challenge book, they each have a little memory in my scrap basket.

My love of sewing with my scraps started with this little log cabin quilt.  Here is the tutorial.

I found it on one of my all time favorite blogs Melly and Me.  I met them at Quilt Market too!  They are generous and sweet sisters full of talent.  And a new fabric line!

Well now through my other girl friends at The Tin Thimble, I am able to embark on more scrappy sewing fun.  And you are invited to join me!  I will be teaching 4 classes at The Tin Thimble for their Home Ec sewing classes.

Each classes will be focused around using up some of those special fabric scraps that you have been saving.  Now you will be able to use them and make special items for your home and maybe sew up a gift for a special and lucky friend!

The classes will be held on Wednesday nights in March from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. for $30 per class.  A supply list will be provided when you sign up. Just call (916) 652-2134. I'll be sharing project photo's with you this coming week!  Here is all of the class info that you will need:

happiness

It can surely be found in a box.  My kids have shown me that many, many times.  When on Christmas they always have to save the boxes that their presents come in.  They find a lot of fun and happiness in that box long after the 12 days have passed.

Yesterday I found that same happiness. My hub checked the mail and found a box full of wonderful Valentine's!  I participated in a crafty Valentine swap with Sarah at Makin' Projiks.  I made 14 scrappy pins all made from some romantic Holly Holderman fabric.  And received in return 14 other little packages of sweetness.  All in one box!

My new crafty friend Michaele put together a wonderful slide show of all of the treats we each received.   You really need to look at.  I already have a new idea of what to make for the 2011 swap!  Thank you Sarah for all of your hard work puttin' together all of our boxes filled with happiness!

I hope your day is filled with sweetness and love!

inside

I think I need to show you my two little projects that I made for the new book.  They are both two items that I am still making today.  They are so fun and easy.

This is the child's apron.  Featuring my favorite model.  I was with my mom when I bought this fabric.  I actually wasn't going to buy any more tea towels.  But she twisted my arm.

I really like to make the aprons.  It lets the wonderful fabric be the focus.

This is the eye glass case.  I thought it would be a cute gift to make someone to commemorate a special year, anniversary, or birthday.  The calendar portion of the tea towel is what makes up the lining inside the case.  I usually make these up using vintage tablecloth remnants.  Whatever fabric you choose, have fun with it!

i squealed

Really I did!  Once I figured out that the package on my door step was for me I guessed at the surprise waiting inside for me.

Isn't it just great!  I again have 2 of my projects featured in this new book.  I made a child's apron, with the help of a handrawn pattern by my sister, and an eye glass case.  If you flip through the pages you will also see a few tea towels from my own personal collection.

It is just all so great for me to see it all come together.  The pictures are fantastic and the sewing projects are original and a lot of fun to see.   This tea towel book is a companion to the pillowcase challenge book.  What do you love to repurpose?

p.s. my sister Judith just wrote a blog post about book covers that you might also find amusing!

thank you

The HELP Haiti event that I vended Friday night was able to raise $1300.  Thank you everyone who came out!  I gave 20% of my sales to the organization which went to help orphans in Haiti.

I made a few new items especially for the night.  This is a banner made using an old Mother Goose book and some vintage seam binding.  I really tried to keep them gender neutral.  I think they would be fun to use for baby shower decorations.

I also made up some new onesie and blanket sets.  I love going through my fabric bins.  Especially the vintage fabrics.  It is hard to cut up, but I love seeing it made into something new and useful again.

Thanks again for coming out on your Friday night to Sacramento.  $1300 is an amount that we should all be happy in raising.

HELP haiti

The earthquake in Haiti has hit close to home for those who are in the process of adopting children in Haiti or thinking about beginning the process. There are thousands of children homeless and hundreds who have families in the United States who have been waiting to bring home their children - some for years. Haiti before the eartquake had 300,000 orphans and not enough orphanages to care for them.

In an effort to help, Glitter and Grunge has organized a benefit concert and handmade sale in Sacramento. They are working to have representation from Haiti and two families whose children are still in Haiti to come and tell their stories and help raise money to help orphans in Haiti.

G&G is working with an organization called Help End Local Poverty (www.helpendlocalpoverty.com) which works closely with two Rescue Center/Orphanges in Port au Prince, as well as orphanges in Africa. The fundraiser will specifically benefit the Hatian orphanages.

The event is February 5 at 7 pm and will feature a number of local indie musicians and crafters.  Each vendor will be donating at least 10% of heir sales that evening go to HELP. The event takes place at Arcade Church in Sacramento, 3927 Marconi Ave.

Come and see me this Friday as I will be donating 20% of my sales to HELP.

come and see

I have a great friend at Style Crush aka Pepto Girl, named Amy.  She does all sorts of wonderful things for me.  Like redoing my website, helping me out with my blog and even making little banners and ads.  Amy is my go to girl.

Amy has just created for me this great new tutorial icon.  Now you can see the little things that I make and you can make them for yourself, or for a lucky friend!  I hope you use it.  And even better I hope you make something new!

In the future if I will try to get even craftier and pass on even more interesting things for you to make.  But I must warn you, I did just make a new flower brooch and I have taken many, many pictures of it!
